Als historisch-biographische Lexika sind die ADB (55 Bände und ein Register, 1875-1912) und die NDB (23 Bände, seit 1953) erstrangige Informationsmittel zu ca. 90.000 Personen, die im deutschsprachigen Raum in herausragender Weise wirksam waren. Vom Mittelalter bis zur Gegenwart werden alle Bereiche des öffentlichen, wissenschaftlichen, wirtschaftlichen und kulturellen Lebens berücksichtigt.

Die Bibliothek des Archivs ist eine gut sortierte Spezialbibliothek zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts, mit Schwerpunkt auf der Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gesellschaft und der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft. Nachweise von Monographien, Periodika sowie Aufsätzen aus Zeitschriften und Sammelwerken. Die Sacherschließung erfolgt unter Einsatz der SWD.

The Bibliography of the History of Art (BHA) contains abstracts and indexes of current publications in the history of art, including scholarly journals, conferences, book, exhibition reviews, and exhibition catalogues. The records consist of bibliographic citations, abstracts, and indexing. Note that the database search includes BHA, covering 1990-2007, the International Bibliography of Art (IBA), covering the years 2008 and part of 2009, and the Répertoire de la litterature de l'art (RILA), one of the predecessors of BHA, with records that cover 1975–1989.

With more than 700.000 items, the BBF is today Europe's second largest library specialised in education. Like the Herzog-August-Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel, it belongs to the association of German cultural research libraries fulfilling a national role.

Mit über 20.000 Artikeln, die sowohl von renommierten Wissenschaftlern als auch von interessierten Laien verfasst wurden, gilt das BBKL als sehr aktuelle und umfangreiche biographische Informationsquelle zu Personen der Kirchen-, aber auch der Philosophiegeschichte. Nur der auf knappe Kurzinformationen beschränkte biografische Teil der BBKL ist kostenfrei zugänglich, der Rest ist lizenzpflichtig.

Clio-online is a central Internet gateway for historical scholarship in teaching and research. Sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), the gateway enables efficient access to the diverse range of historical online ressources available to scholars and teachers within the field of history. Clio-online ist ein zentrales Internet Fachportal zur Geschichte. Seit Mai 2002 von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft gefördert, ermöglicht das Projekt durch seine Online-Dienste und Service-Angebote einen effizienten Zugang zu den umfangreichen Online-Ressourcen innerhalb der Geschichtswissenschaften.

Digi20 concentrates on the digitalization of monographs published in the second half of the 20th century, predominantly in the field of humanities and social sciences. In the first phase of the project, approx. 4,700 titles of programme segments of the publishers Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, Wilhelm Fink / Ferdinand Schöningh as well as Otto Sagner were digitized. In a second phase, further approx. 1,750 titles are being included till 2014 by consecutively digitizing all monographs up to a defined ‘Moving Wall’ of three to five years to the current year of publication.

The Digital Library of the Commons (DLC) is a gateway to the international literature on the commons. The DLC provides free and open access to full-text articles, papers, and dissertations. This site contains an author-submission portal; an Image Database; the Comprehensive Bibliography of the Commons; a Keyword Thesaurus, and links to relevant reference sources on the study of the commons.

The search engine provides users with the option to search various historically relevant databases and catalogues on general and European history in parallel.

The database establishes historic books published in Germany or in the German-speaking abroad. Moreover, it covers German- and foreign language-speaking papers from journals and collected editions (congress papers and commemorative publications) as well as other historic publications. Added to this are records from the "Jahrbuch der historischen Forschung", which refers to current research work.

This database covers international publications about German history from the early days until the present. Die Datenbank erfaßt und erschließt internationale Veröffentlichungen zur deutschen Geschichte von den Anfängen bis zur Gegenwart.

Traditionell liegt der Schwerpunkt der Sammlung auf Künstlermonographien (auch Ausstellungskatalogen), kunsttopographischer Literatur zu den Regionen und Orten Italiens sowie auf Quellenschriften

Im Rahmen der digitalen Monumenta Gremaniae Historica (dMGH) wurden in einem von der DFG geförderten Gemeinschaftsprojekt zwischen den MGH und der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek, München, sämtliche Editionsbände der MGH digitalisiert und Open Access zur Verfügung gestellt. Neue Bände werden nach einer Schutzfrist von drei Jahren in die dMGH aufgenommen („moving wall“). Bis Ende 2010 war die Volltexterfassung der älteren Bände abgeschlossen. Eine Volltextsuche ist über die Abteilungen möglich: - Scriptores (Geschichtsschreiber) - Leges (Rechtstexte) - Diplomata (Urkunden) - Epistolae (Briefe) - Antiquitates (Dichtung und Gedenküberlieferung) - Quellen zur Geistesgeschichte des Mittelalters (QQ zur Geistesgesch.) - Deutsches Mittelalter. The library of the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science is an interdisciplinary special library focussing in its collections on the history of science. Its inventory, built up since 1994, is only available to scientists from the institute and is not part of the interlibrary loan system.

The Library of the Max-Planck-Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity is a specialized library with a focus on religious studies, anthropology, political science and sociology. The library does not participate in interlibrary loans but serves as a reference library to provide literature and information, mainly to the members of the Institute.

Die Österreichische Historische Bibliographie (ÖHB) ist eine Literaturdokumentation, die am Institut für Geschichte an der Universität Klagenfurt durchgeführt und automationsunterstützt bearbeitet wird. Die ÖHB verzeichnet die Publikationen der österreichischen Geschichtsforschung, soweit sie in Österreich erschienen sind.
